Fun with the Boyles

The Boyles made the trek up to see us this weekend.  Within seconds of their arrival, the kids were off playing and we didn't see the kids for quite some time.  It forever melts my heart how those four kids pick up right where they left off.  Us adults too!  Love, love, love!

I wish that perhaps I took a few more pictures of our time together, but I didn't.  Sadly.
I did, however, get this one of the four when we went out to lunch.

And I got several at dinner, which was entertainment in and of itself.  We took the kids to The Melting Pot, which is a fondue restaurant.  We weren't really sure how the kidlings would do with this restaurant - as it isn't your traditional restaurant.

We were thrilled to know that they had a blast!   After each course, we rated it with Lila's rating scale.  We either gave it a Fon-Do or Fon-Don't!  We had an overwhelming Fon-Do for the WHOLE experience.  We were there for over two and a half hours and the kids didn't complain once - totally entertained the entire time.  Wahoo!

Getting a picture proved to be a bit difficult though.  A few outtakes...

Man alive, how we love these friends of ours.  Though their time with us was far too short this weekend, we made the most of every minute we had.

President's Day Fun

The girls and I packed up and headed west for President's Day weekend.  We had a couple of days off of school, and thought this would be the perfect weekend to meet Grandma Jane.

We met halfway at Iowa City.  There is not a ton of stuff to see or do in Iowa City, but that wasn't the point of being there anyway.  We just wanted to spend time together.

We went out to eat - Taco John's, of course! Yum.

We did some shopping and swimming.  Lots of swimming.

Oh, and we played a ton of games.
Card games, dice games, board games.  You name it, we played it!

It was the best, most relaxing way to spend the weekend.
We are thankful Grandma Jane made the long trip to see us!

Biz Town

Quinn's class took a field trip this week to BizTown, put on by Junior Achievement.  They had been studying economics and business for the past couple of months and this field trip put their skills to test.

Essentially BizTown is a tiny town, run by the students.  BizTown had a city hall, two banks, and multiple stores (Lilly Labs, Fed Ex, Radio Disney, Steak N Shake and more).

Prior to the field trip, they had to apply for the three jobs that they wanted and explain why they would be good for that role.  They were selected for their role based upon their application.  Quinn was chosen to work in City Hall, as the Town Treasurer, which she was thrilled about.

Here is the Town Treasurer, before she left for school.

Throughout their lesson they also learned how to balance a checkbook, write checks, make deposits, apply for a loan and so much more!  An amazing amount of valuable life skills.

I was lucky enough to be able to go on the field trip - lucky in the sense that I marked "no" to the opportunity to go on the permission slip.  Then I got the "congratulations, you've been selected to go on this field trip" email.  So I embraced the opportunity to go, and took the day off work.  I am SO thankful I did. Hands down, one of the best field trips I've been on!

Parents were not allowed to be in the same business as their student, which turned out to be just fine.  I was the mentor helper for Radio Disney.  These were the lovely ladies I got to work with all day.

They learned how to play music, collect ads from businesses, write stories to air, collect money and sell various door prizes.  It was pretty cool!

My dear daughter even managed to stop by to say 'hi'!

Even though I was in Radio Disney all day, I managed to sneak away to peek in on the Town Treasurer and steal a couple of pictures!

Here is the "vice mayor" -as Quinn called herself.  She was next in line behind the mayor, and took over for the mayor while she went to lunch and was on break.

The mayor happened to be one of her good friends, Maddie.  So she was thrilled to work with her all day.  Here is the mayor's inner circle...

Throughout the day, they were in charge of getting paid, going to the bank on their break, keeping track of their bank balance and not go over their limit when spending.  This was difficult for some!

One of the shops produced a town paper.  They sold them on the streets to the citizens of BizTown.

Our dear Quinn's Letter to the Editor made the paper.
The response to her letter cracked me up.

It's hard to read in the picture, but the gist of Quinn's letter stated that it is unfair that 5th graders don't get to play basketball for the school - only 6th graders.  She thought 5th graders should get to play too.

The editor's response was..."I totally understand when you don't get to do what you want, you can sometimes get frustrated.  Just take a deep breather and maybe take a stop by Riley's Children's Hospital and get a stress ball!

I am so pleased with how much Quinn learned about business, finance, and overall responsibility.  I can't say enough about this experience!

Sleep Tight...

One of the girls favorite things to do is camp out in our bedroom.  They ask often and are granted sometimes.  This weekend they hit the jackpot...

All snuggled in - with about every single stuffed animal and pillow that they own!

I Heart Dancing...

Ryan took the girls to their first Father/Daughter Dance this weekend.  Quinn and Sullivan were beyond thrilled to go.

Quinn picked out a fancy dress for the event, while Sullivan was overjoyed to wear her "wedding dress" again.  After all, it was an amazing twirling dress and Sullivan had BIG plans to do some twirling.

After getting dressed, Quinn was feeling like a million bucks.  She just HAD to take some selfies.  It's what we do these days...

The girls cleaned up beautifully.  Amazingly gorgeous.

Getting their corsages on...

The happy party goers...

After a few pictures, they were off to the dance.
They got their faces painted right away...

And then did some dancing...

Quinn's friend, Maddy, was also at the dance.  Ryan said that Quinn and Maddy spent a great deal of the night dancing together.  These pictures made me smile.

Ryan said the girls really enjoyed themselves - and it was confirmed with the girls after the dance.  Surprising though, Sullivan was shy on the dance floor.  Once she got there, she didn't want much to do with dancing at all.

Nonetheless, lots of great memories made this weekend.  Memories the girls will cherish for years to come.  Ryan too.

Superbowl Sunday

Ryan went to a co-workers house for the Superbowl this past weekend, which left us ladies to fend for ourselves.  Never fear, we had a great night watching football and keeping busy.

The girls had a picnic in the living room while watching the game...

Then we filled the night with craft after craft.

Sullivan painted...

Quinn helped me with a small sign I was making...

And I painted this sign for the dining room....

(still needs to be aged and framed)

And of course, the girls made a slew of Perler bead creations...

It was the best, most relaxing Super Bowl I could have imagined...!

Miss Messy Mouth

A couple of snapshots of our free spirited, messy little hooligan from this weekend.
She sure knows how to enjoy her food (and wear it!).

In all fairness to Q, there aren't many pictures of her to share from these past two weekends.  She has had marathon sleepovers/play dates and hasn't been around to snap pictures of.  Busy girl!
